Our Fall long series on spotlighting & combatting the main student motivations for cheating in the AI Age in our classes continues with VALUES.
The data points to a gap between Professor and students' perception of the harm in cheating in college classes. So we need to intentionally weave in building a shared common ground of academic integrity into our courses. This can be done with shared code making, integrity nudges and emphasis on learning (vs points points points).

Our Fall long series on spotlighting & combatting the main student motivations for cheating in the AI Age in our classes continues with Expectations. While often times we want to leave it at a self-contained Week 1 exercise on what is our cheating expectations, that can leave lots of room for legitimate misunderstanding on where the line with AI is. Likewise when the rubber meets the road and students get into the meat of the course, Week 1 is a long gone distant landmark in the rear view. So we look at how to keep our expectations and dialog with students on what IS legit AI use front and center throughout the course.

If a project or assignment places students into the deep end and they don't have support or a way to even begin to approach the work, that can lead to cheating. This looks at how to support growth and student confidence AND doing good for teaching along the way.

Out Fall long series on spotlighting & combatting the main student motivations for cheating in our classes starts its tour with Cost-Benefit Analysis. Despite our brimstone warnings, students will take our assignments on a case by case basis generally and can consider the costs of cheating vs the benefits. We look at the what of this, as well as why and how we can defuse this by raising the costs AND doing good for teaching along the way.
